With Davis dead, the pirates were forced to flee Príncipe. Davis accepted, but on the way to the fort, the pirates were ambushed and killed by the governor's soldiers. Later that day, Davis received a letter asking him to come to the fort for a glass of wine before lunch. Unfortunately, the governor knew that Davis was not one to be trusted, and set a trap of his own. The Royal Rover flew the flag of a British Man-o-War, and was allowed to enter the harbor.ĭavis invited the governor of Príncipe to the Rover for lunch, but little did the he know that Davis actually intended to hold him for ransom. Davis continued on to the Portuguese island of Príncipe. A few weeks after Roberts’ capture, the Royal James was abandoned due to worm damage. His great talents at sea created many opportunities to rise through the ranks. Davis was Welsh as well, so he could communicate messages to Robert without the rest of the crew understanding. As time passed, captain Davis saw Robert's usefulness: he was not only a great navigator, but he also spoke Welsh.
